What can I do with a Bachelor of General Studies?

Ask yourself: What do you want to do with any degree? Have you explored different disciplines and/or already defined your particular career aspirations? If not, this would be a good place to start. Our academic advisors can assist you with finding your path, along with the advisors in the Major and Career Exploration Center.

Take ownership of your degree and plan for your future! Do you have grad school on your mind? If so, get informed about what the criteria is for the graduate school/program you are pursuing. Steer your degree to get you there! If you plan well, you can possibly complete some graduate level classes [4xx(G)] within your Bachelor of General Studies curriculum, putting you in a favorable position as a graduate school applicant.

As a graduate with a Bachelor of General Studies, depending on your area of concentration, the courses you chose to fulfill your 120-hour degree requirements, and your level of achievement, you can work in a variety of fields. The possibilities of career fields are limitless. 

A few examples are...

Health Care Administration

Combine a major in Business Studies (Health Services Administration, Management, Marketing, Business Law) with enrichment in Applied Sciences (Health Information Management) and Behavioral Sciences (Sociology, Health, Psychology).  You may want to consider a Pre-MBA minor as well.

Law

Consider a major in the Arts/Humanities block (English, History, Philosophy, Communications and Language) with enrichment in Business Studies (Business Law) and further enrichment in Behavioral Sciences (Sociology, Criminal Justice and Political Science).  A minor in Legal Studies would be beneficial.

Oil Field Technology/Services

Combine a major in Applied Sciences (Computer Sciences, Industrial Technology, Environmental Sciences and/or Engineering) with enrichment in Business Studies (Management) and Arts/Humanities (Communication).  A Geographic Information Science certification might support your career goals.

Pre-school Administration

Combine a major in Applied Sciences (Child and Family Studies) with enrichment in Business Studies (Accounting, Management & Marketing) and Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Kinesiology & Health). 

Social Services

Combine a major in Behavioral Sciences (Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice) with enrichment in Applied Sciences (Child & Family Studies, Health) and Arts/Humanities (Communication). 

Business Owner

Are you an entrepreneur? Maybe you would like to major in Business Studies (Management, Marketing, Business Law) courses along with subject matter related to the type of business you are interested in. For example, if you want to own a gym or fitness center, you should consider combining a major in Business Studies (Management, Marketing, Business Law) with enrichment in the Applied Sciences (Kinesiology, Health & Recreation).  A minor in Exercise Science would be appropriate here.

If you're not sure what kind of coursework you need for what you want to do, seek out people who have the job you want. Ask them what coursework served them well in their career, and what they wish they'd known more about. Be proactive and strategically plan to take the coursework that will help get you where you want to be. Combine subject matter to cross disciplines, and your varied knowledgebase will give you an advantage.

We encourage you to seek classes which support additional specializations or certifications through the University's Continuing Education Program.  Examples:  Praxis 1 Prep., GMAT Prep, Medical  Assistant Certification, Project Management, and Office Applications Specialist.

So, what can you do with a Bachelor of General Studies degree? You get to decide. This is a degree that allows you to think outside of the box! Don't limit yourself. Take the classes that matter. Plan ahead. Design your degree to get what YOU want.
