DOORS Program (Diversified Opportunities
for Older and Returning Students)

What is DOORS? | Testing | Credits | Cost

DOORS is a special admission category for persons aged 21 or older. Applicants are admitted to the University as non-degree seeking students.

The DOORS admission status waives some academic credentials, including ACTE or other standardized test scores. You must have a high school diploma or GED to apply for the DOORS program. If you are denied admission to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as a regular, degree seeking student, you cannot be admitted as a non-degree seeking student. Non-degree seeking students may register for any courses offered as long as they meet course requirements, such as pre-requisites and co-requisites. Course limitations apply as specified in the UL Lafayette catalog.

The ACTE is normally used for placement in beginning English and Math courses. DOORS applicants who have not taken the ACTE may take the UL Lafayette DOORS Placement Tests in English and Math. To take the English Placement Exam, please contact the UL Lafayette Testing Office in Olivier Hall, Room 212. The telephone number to the Testing Office is (337) 482-6480. To take the Math Placement Exam, please contact the UL Lafayette Math Department at (337) 482-6702.

Because credentials are waived for DOORS applicants, a maximum of fifteen (15) semester hours of credit earned in non-remedial courses may later be applied toward a degree at UL Lafayette. When DOORS applicants wish to change to degree seeking status, they must meet regular degree seeking admission requirements, including transcripts of all previous studies. DOORS Placement Test scores may be used to substitute for the ACTE, only if the DOORS student registers for and completes both English and Math before changing to another major/classification. Prospective Nursing students are required to submit scores from the ACTE before they can be considered for admission to that program.

Tuition rates are the same for DOORS students as they are for degree-seeking students. DOORS students and other non-degree classifications DO NOT qualify for financial aid.
